Easy DIY Dog Love Sign To Make This Weekend

I'm super excited to share my latest weekend project with you! It's all about dog love, so what's not to be excited about, right?!

This easy DIY dog sign would go perfectly on any wall in your home.  You could even hang your dog's portrait photos, with this sign, to create a beautiful, dog themed, wall gallery.

If you enjoy painting and creating wooden signs, you're going to love this do it yourself project.  It was super easy to find the supplies at my local craft store, and many of the items were on sale. Win-win!

With Valentine's Day just around the corner, this is the perfect weekend project to make for all the dog lovers in your life.

Of course, you're going to want to make one for yourself too!

Craft and paint supplies needed to make a dog love wooden sign.

Note:  I used DecoArt Paints, but you can use any brand you like.  Just be sure they are acrylic paints suitable for painting on wood.

Disclaimer:  This is not a sponsored post.  Though, I would shout to the rooftops, if I was given the opportunity! But back to real life... Heck, DecoArt doesn't even know who I am!

Instructions:

  1. Prepare your flat work surface by placing down a piece of cardboard or sheet of plastic.  You can even use a trash bag.
  2. Inspect your wooden fence wall hanging, wooden letters and heart, for any rough edges or splinters.  Sand lightly if needed.
  3. Paint your blank wooden fence wall hanging with the Dark Chocolate Acrylic Paint.  Apply the paint with the 3" Foam Paint Applicator Brush.
  4. Allow the paint to dry on the  wooden fence wall hanging.
  5. Add a second coat of paint to the wooden fence, if desired.  It all depends on the look you are trying to achieve. I only used one coat, it gives the sign a rustic, sun bleached look.
  6. Paint all the wooden letters with Ice Crystal Glamour Dust Ultra Fine Glitter Paint, using your shaded and angular brushes.  Apply 2-3 coats, allow to dry in between coats.  If you are lucky enough to find the wooden letters with glitter, you can omit this step!
  7. Paint the interior heart of the double wooden heart with the  Cherry Red Acrylic Paint, using your shaded brush. Apply 2-3 coats, allow to dry in between coats.
  8. Paint the exterior heart of the double wooden heart with Ice Crystal Glamour Dust Ultra Fine Glitter Paint, using your shaded brush.  Apply 2-3 coats, allow to dry in between coats.
  9. If desired, you can lightly sand the edges of the heart to give it a worn, rustic look.  This step is optional, depending on your home decor style.
Time to assemble your sign:
  1. Check that all your painted pieces are dry.
  2. Place  your painted, wooden fence wall hanging on a flat surface.
  3. Arrange your painted, wooden letters and heart on the fence wall hanging, as pictured below.
  4. Once you have the correct placement, adhere the wooden letters and heart with glue gun or wood glue.
  5. If your wall hanging did not come with the wall hangers, attach them at the back.
  6. Display on your wall or wrap it in pretty paper for gifting!

Helpful Tips:

  • Wash your multi-purpose paint brushes and foam brushes in mild, soapy warm water.  Allow to air dry.
  • Wash your brushes before changing to a different color paint.
  • The 1/4" Angular Paint Brush is perfect for getting in the nooks and crannies of the wooden fence sign.
  • Work in a well lit, ventilated area.
  • Keep damp and dry paper towels on hand for easy clean up of spills.
I hope you enjoy creating this dog love sign as much as I did!

When you finish your sign, I would love to hear all about it! Do you plan to incorporate this sign into a wall gallery? If so, I would love to see a picture!

One final note, the shade of the dark chocolate paint is an exact match to the color of a chocolate bar.  By the time I was finished painting the wooden fence, I was ready for some chocolate!  You might want to add a chocolate bar to your shopping list, just saying...   ❤
