My Dog Has Allergies, What To Do Part Two

A few weeks ago I found out that Tootsie has allergies.  How did I find out? A visit to the vet for a suspected ear infection... If you missed the news, you can read all about Tootsie's visit to the vet

Tootsie the Chi: My Dog Has Allergies

So naturally, my first question to the veterinarian, when I found out Tootsie had allergies, was what can I do to help her.

The vet explained to me that my dog's allergies were more than likely caused by her food, since she is mostly an indoor dog.  It was highly recommended that I change her food.

So of course, I had lots of questions about what type of food to feed her and what to avoid.  The veterinarian recommended I find a high quality food from a reputable pet food store.  She suggested a shop in our area and for Tootsie to go with me for a consultation.

At the consultation, this is what I learned:

  • Chicken is one of the most common proteins to cause allergies in dogs, lamb is second.
  • Carbohydrates are the main cause of yeast growth in dog's ears.
  • Fish is the best protein to feed a dog with skin issues.
The owner of the pet food shop was extremely helpful.  She took the time to help me find a food brand that did not contain the top allergens and suggested I start Tootsie with one that had fish as the only source of protein.  They had free sample bags for us to try.

So at dinner that night, I offered Tootsie a few kibbles of the new food with her regular food.  Tootsie wanted nothing to do with this new kibble!

A week went by, Tootsie was still refusing to even try this new fishy kibble!

So back to the pet shop I went...

The shop owner was quite surprised that Tootsie did not like fish.  She spent time with me going over other foods that I could try.  I decided on a brand that is sourced and manufactured in the USA.  The main protein is beef as well as pork and also includes fresh vegetables and fruits. It is grain free and no potatoes or dairy.

I had no idea if Tootsie was going to like this food or turn her nose up.  The shop owner did not have samples of this brand, but assured me if Tootsie did not like the food, I could return it for a full refund.

When I got the bag home, Tootsie couldn't wait for me to open it, she was jumping up and down and whining.  Good sign, in my book!

As soon as I placed the first kibble in her dish, she was on it. A happy, happy, joy moment for sure!

I am slowly transitioning Tootsie to her new food, as not to cause any digestive upset.  Fingers crossed she does well in this new kibble.  Now to find some treats that are grain, dairy and chicken free!

Do any of your dogs have food allergies?  What have you done to help comfort your fur baby?

Be sure to give hugs and smoochies to your fur baby, as well as a well balanced diet ❤

  1. Charlie has a grass allergy! Allergies are so annoying!! Hope Tootsie feels better soon. It's hard to find hypoallergenic treats, so I make my own!

    1. I'm sorry to hear about Charlie's grass allergy, that makes it tough to do outdoor activities. That's a great idea to make your own treats, I'll have to look into that❤

  2. This is such a great post! Very informative. I'm so impressed that you have a pet store that will do a food consultation! I've never heard of that. Shared on all my social channels.

  3. Our dogs don't have allergies, but I did know that chicken was a common allergen for them. So just to hopefully avoid allergies in the future, we don't buy food or treats with chicken in them. If they get chicken, it's only when I've cooked it fresh.
I'm so glad you found something that Tootsie likes! My dogs go nuts for fish, that's one of our favorite flavor kibbles to get, so I'm also surprised she didn't like it! Then again, our crew has never been fussy about anything, except fresh fruits or veggies!

    1. Thank you for visiting Jan and your kindness. I was super surprised about the fish with Tootsie too. I've been slowly introducing other proteins into her diet since this post and she will actually eat salmon now ❤
